The weekly hardware sales charts for Japan are in and it’s more of the same as Nintendo holds the top spot with the 3DS followed by three Sony consoles.
When it comes to hardware in the video game industry, chances are that it will release in Japan before it comes on over to the West. The most recent example is with Sony’s PlayStation Vita, which hit shelves in Japan on the 22nd of December before
its release in Europe and North America in February.
However, despite Sony stating that they are pleased by the sales of the Vita so far, many analysts believe that the figures are disappointing. At the same time they believe that a price cut for the Vita would do the console a world of wonders and see its
sales figures climb exponentially, much like the 3DS’ did when Nintendo implemented the price cut.
Since then the 3DS has dominated the hardware sales charts and still continues to do so as the console sold another 64.017 units over the course of the past seven days.
Sony’s PlayStation 3 console finished a distant second as the console continues to sell well as it reaches its full potential. A total of 27,900 PS3s were sold in the past week.
The PlayStation Portable continues to embarrass the PlayStation Vita as the former maintains the third spot in the charts. The PSP sold 18,633 units while the Vita barely made it to five digits.
The Vita moved only 10,021 units which is only 20-units lower than its previous week’s figure (10,041 units). The Nintendo Wii could also claim to be competing with the Vita without having to worry about being ridiculed as it sold 8.127 units.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 did not gain any popularity among the Japanese consumers as it only managed to sell a total of 1,145 units, which to be honest, is nothing unexpected seeing the console’s struggle in the region.
