The 4-year-old colt, Drosselmeyer to retire in New York after his Breeders’ Cup Classic race
The 2010 Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner, Drosselmeyer will run his last race in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011, and after will retire to stud in New York in 2012.
Trained by Bill Mott for owner WinStar Farm, 4-year-old colt Drosselmeyer is coming off a second place finish in the Grade Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on 1 October, 2011, under jockey J Lezcano over at the distance of 1 ¼ miles.
Overall the son of Distorted Humor, out of Golden Ballet by Moscow Belt, Drosselmeyer has had a topsy-turvy 2011 season where he has only managed a single win out of six starts.
The win came in the non graded stakes, the One Count Stakes at Belmont Park on 15 May, 2011, under his usual jockey J Lezcano on dirt over at the distance of 1 ¼ mile.
In the process Drosselmeyer downed Birdrun and Inherit The Gold, who finished second and third, respectively, while Drosselmeyer covered the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles in 2 minute and 6.07 seconds.
The Kentucky bred 4-year-old colt turned another impressive performance in the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap over his favourite Belmont Park’s dirt track.
Running over the distance of 1 ½ miles Drosselmeyer couldn’t edge past his One Count Stakes opponent Birdrun, who kept it strong in the final run to hit the wire in 2 minutes and 28.24 seconds.
In his only Grade 1 race of the 2011 season, Drosselmeyer participated in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational, switching to turf after running most of his career on dirt.
Drosselmeyer turned in a dismal performance and weakened in the stretch to fall way behind as he finished seven on the day, while Winchester, Rahy’s Attorney and Al Khali finished as the top three respectively with winning time of 2 minutes and 26.74 seconds.
Drosselmeyer has gone on to win four times throughout his career, but he could’ve finished better if he had converted those 11 runner up positions out of 15 starts into wins. His lifetime earnings have gone up to a million, and he was also a dual Grade 1
winner.
