The 60 to 1 shot Weewinnin sees off Fighting Hussar to take the King Glorious
The closing day of the 2012 Betfair Hollywood Park’s autumn meet witnessed the biggest surprise pulled off by a longshot all meet, as Brian J. Koriner trained 2-year-old dark bay colt, Weewinnin, registered a 60 to 1 shocker in a field of 11 juvenile colts
to win the inaugural running of the $200,000 King Glorious Stakes on 16 December, 2012.
Run over a distance of seven furlongs over Hollywood Park’s cushion track, the King Glorious Stakes was a contest between juvenile California breds, and the race was added to the Hollywood Park’s stakes schedule because of the Golden State Series.
The son of Comic Strip, Weewinnin registered his second career victory in three starts, and the colt was coming off a four and one-half month layoff. The last time he made an appearance was in the Graduation Stakes at Del Mar on 1 August, 2012, where he
finished fourth in a field of five to winner, Strong Wind.
The big outsider in the King Glorious Stakes campaigns for his breeders Dr. and Mrs. William T. Gray, and co-owners E-Racing.Com, and Janet Lyons, et al. In the King Glorious Stakes, Weewinnin under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. pulled between horses early in
the race, and stalked outside.
Deep in the stretch, the duo gained the lead and in the mid stretch he was held gamely under urging, as the pair posted a half-length victory over the 11 to 1 shot, Fighting Hussar, who as ridden by Rafael Bejarano.
The 2 to 1 favourite, and the 121 pound highweight, Monument, finished third, three-quarter of a length adrift from the second place finisher under Juan Hernandez, as the 7 to 1 shot, Tiz a Minister finished fourth.
"He ran a freaky race when he broke his maiden," Koriner said. "When he ran at Del Mar we were a little upset, but he came out of the race with (sore) shins. That's why he didn't go on. We were upset because we paid pretty good money for the horse (after
his maiden victory). My owners had me on the line for overpaying—I think we gave $100,000—but we got it all back today."
