Great fight! I don't think the older Ali could catch the younger one. I don't think I've seen anyone that could have beaten the younger Ali that night.

There is a reason why it's considered a young mans sport.

Very interesting question, considering it's the same man, but different eras.  

The Ali of the Williams fight was faster, had much better reflexes, and probably hit harder.  He was a young, primed talent, and his gifts at heavyweight are only rivaled by Joe Louis.  

The Ali of the third Frazier fight was something extra special, though.  He was in there with the single fighter that brought out the absolute BEST in Ali.  Frazier was great against all the fighters he faced (except Foreman, of course), but was EXTREMELY GREAT against Ali.  Both men, to this day, admit that without each other, they would not have reached the pinnacle of the sport in the manner that they did.  

Older Ali fought almost entirely on heart, which was there in the younger Ali, but not relied upon as often as in his older years.  He dug really deep to come up with the will to continue against a fellow great in Joe Frazier to battle 14 killer rounds in the Manilla heat.  Both men were beyond exhausted, and both wanted to stop after 14 rounds, but Frazier's corner stopped it first, and Ali was declared the winner. . . .barely able to even stand to accept his giant trophy from the Prime Minister of the Phillipines.  

Ali from Manila beats younger Ali due to overall determination and overwhelming heart.
