  1. i like the grateful dead more, i think they were a better live band as well...

sabes99 wtf are u talking about, you've obviously never listened to the dead cuz all of their songs aren't about drugs...yeah there are a couple songs about drugs like casey jones but that was a poor generalization on your part...tool

  2. Hmm I like the Allman Brothers a bit more

Live At The Fillmore East or Eat a Peach

    Jessica,Whipping Post,Ramblin Man,Statesboro Blues,Midnight Rider etc etc

    Grateful Dead

    Terrapin Station

    Mexicali Blues,Friend of the Devil,Casey Jones,Truckin,Ripple

  3. The Allman Brother's Band. Love Melissa, Blue Sky, and Jessica.

  4. You've taken two of my favorite bands... bands with a similar (to my ears) *way* about them, and asked for a favorite....

    My answer:

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

    Can't do it.

I want to say the Dead because I've got 5 of their CDs and only 4 Allman Bros, but I just can't.

  5. Two of my favorite bands during the late 60's early 70's. But so far nobody has mentioned the fact that they were two of the earliest examples of rock bands featuring two drummers, and two guitarists simultaneously, pre-dating the twin lead concept carried out later on by other bands like Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest etc.

My favorite albums by the Allman Brothers would be their self titled debut, Idlewild South, Live at the Fillmore, Eat a Peach, and Brothers and Sisters.

The early 90's two CD set titled 'Live at the Ludlow Garage 1970' is great too, and features a 44 minute version of Mountain Jam...highly recommended, as it predates the Fillmore concert by over 1 year. Very good example of the band live:

Some of my favorite songs are...

    In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

It's Not My Cross to Bear

    Les Brers in A Minor

    Midnight Rider

    Ramblin' Man

    Dreams

    Whipping Post

    Statesboro Blues

    Jessica

    Trouble No More

    Dimples

    Black Hearted Woman

    Revival

    Melissa

My favorite Grateful Dead albums are their debut(1967), Anthem of The Sun,

Aoxomoxoa, Live / Dead, Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, Grateful Dead (st 1971), and Europe '72...basically all of their albums released between 1967-72. I like several things they did post '72 also.

Bob was great in Kingfish, and I enjoyed some of Jerry's solo albums, and his work with bands like It's a Beautiful Day and New Riders of the Purple Sage also.

Some of my favorite songs are...

    Cosmic Charlie

    New, New Minglewood Blues

    That's It for the Other One;

    i Cryptical Envelopment

    ii Quadlibet for Tender Feet

iii The Faster We Go, the Rounder We Get

    New Speedway Boogie

    China Cat Sunflower

Beat It On Down The Line

    Dark Star (live)

Beat It on Down the Line

    Casey Jones

    Sugar Magnolia

    High Time

    St. Stephen

    Cold Rain and Snow

    Doin' That Rag

    New Potato Caboose

Turn on Your Love Light (live)

Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)

Sitting On Top Of The World

The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)

    Dupree's Diamond Blues

    Cream Puff War

    Alligator

To say which band is better would be virtually impossible for me to do. Both bands played an integral part of my youth, and choosing one over the other would give me a migraine! Lol. Sorry.

    Great question!

  6. I worship both Bands.

They have sign cant difference in Style - so I cannot Compare them.

In 1971 (NO, I was not alive) - They played at RFK Stadium, together, in Washington DC.

Could you imagine that show ??

    EDIT --

LOL -- Now, that I see how many songs that I Picked.

    My Answer is GRATEFUL DEAD.

But, as I said before, I LOVE both Bands - and Don't think that they belong in the same Category for Comparisons

    .

  7. Well, by my avatar......LOL!  No, seriously:

I like both band equally.  Each have something the other doesn't.  I think people tend to dislike the Dead due to their "fanatics".  Too bad, because they miss out on not knowing their music and just how talented the members of the band are.

Ironically, I just saw the Allman Brothers w/Ratdog (Bobby Weir's band).  Show was awesome all the way around!

    Allman Brothers:

Albums:  Beginnings, Brothers & Sisters, Eat a Peach, Idlewind South, etc.

Songs:  Dreams, Stormy Monday, Ain't My Cross to Bear, Trouble No More, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed........everything really.

    Grateful Dead:

Albums:  d**k's Picks #4, American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, Blues for Allah, Dozin at the Knick, etc.

Songs:  Scarlet Begonias, Candyman, Black Peter, Stella Blue, Black Muddy River, Terrapin Station, Row Jimmy.....everything really.

Exception to both:  since some songs are sooooo overplayed, if I never heard Jessica, Blue Skies, Truckin, Touch of Gray, Casey Jones....if would be too soon.  Sorry, JMO.

  8. The Allman Brothers Band without a doubt!!!!

"Whipping Post" is a priceless tune that bring's chills down my spine everytime I hear it...

  9. The Allman Brothers

  10. the allman brothers crush the grateful dead, and i'm not really a big allman brothers fan...i am still trying to figure out why or how the grateful dead became popular, they were technically poor musicians and didn't write about anything other than drugs

my top 5 songs from the allmans:

    1. ramblin' man

    2. jessica

    3. whipping post

    4. melissa

    5. ain't wastin' time no more

my favorite album is brothers and sisters, followed by eat a peach

  11. Wow. Interesting and nice comparison.

The Allman Brothers Band made one of the best albums in At Fillmore East. I'm a fan of Eat a Peach and their Self-Titled as well. What an incredible band with such talented members. Also, I always enjoyed Greg Allman's voice...he's rarely mentioned.

    The Grateful Dead...

No idea why they are either loved or hated. They have such incredibly talented and overlooked members....they never get brought up in discussions here.

Favorite discs: Anthem of The Sun, American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, Terrapin Station, In The Dark.......

I think a lot of people are turned off by "Deadheads", but why can't you just be a "fan". This band treated their fans better than most too, with all the live albums they issued. Gotta love when your favorite band can do that for you. They made their living off their performances. Nobody ever mentions Phil Lesh either, love his work with the Bass.

Edit: Ahh Smiley, great call on the double drumming attack!!

  12. I've seen both and have to say...although the fan base is very similar (very "organic") to be polite, the music of the Allman Brothers is much more my style....more of a Southern Fried Rock than a Bluesy-Folksy style that tends to be the Dead.

Whipping Post is probably my personal favorite

  13. I'm a deadhead so obviously The Grateful Dead take this one for me.  But I will say that Duane Allman was the best slide guitar player ever.  And I've always dug Gregg's voice.  The Allman's live album from the Fillmore is my favorite by them.

As I say I'm a deadhead so picking a favorite song/album/show is impossible.  It's more of what kind of a mood I'm in at the time.  Lately I've been on a big d**k's Pick's Vol. 15 Disc #3 from 09/03/77.  It goes:

    He's Gone>

    Not Fade Away>

    Truckin'

    Terrapin Station (encore)

The jam between He's Gone and NFA is next level.  That's the first Truckin' in almost 2 years and the Terrapin is my favorite live 70's era version I have.

  14. The Ded.

  15. The Dead i like how theyre a little more psychadelic rock than allman brothers which is more folk.

sugar magnolia, ripple, terrapin station , wharf rat, st stephen, not fade away, peggy o, fire on the mountain, love light, black muddy river, althea, shakedown street, BIRD SONG [obsessed w. it right now haha], candyman, box of rain, sunshine daydream, ship of fools, brown eyed woman, scarlet begonias fooooo shoooooooooo
