The Amgen Tour of California to go higher and tougher in 2012
Organisers of the 7th edition of the Amgen Tour of California, AEG sports revealed that the 2012 edition of the race will be the highest and the toughest as compared to previous years.
Kristin Bachochin, Senior Vice President of AEG Sports briefed that the organisers have left no stones unturned to ensure the high standard of racing at the event.
He explained that the race attracts many tourists from across the world and directly reflects California’s image, which is the main reason behind his extra watchfulness for the event.
Bachochin said, "We spend countless hours poring over possible route scenarios and taking into account fan and rider suggestions before determining the final course, it is a true labor of love".
The race will go through its trademark climbs, including Coleman Valley ascent during the first day and Bonny Doon Road on the second stage.
Mount Diablo is one of the most demanded features by the fans and the management has decided to include the climb during the third stage of the race.
Kristin stated, "We take great pride in developing the route for the Tour of California, not only because it attracts the world's elite cyclists, but because it puts an international spotlight on California for eight days".
The Amgen Tour of California will commence on 13th May 2012, and the event will finally conclude on May 20th after the gruelling eight stages.
The cyclists will ride through an approximate distance of 650-700 kilometres during one week of cycling.
The event was held on February 19th, 2006, for the first time and Floyd Landis of Team Phonak claimed the top position. Levi Leipheimer won the race for the maximum number of three times, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Michael Rogers of Team HTC-Columbia secured the event in 2010, whereas Chris Horner is the most recent winner of the race.
