  1. There really is not an average.  Local climate has changed up and down and warm and wet and all sorts of things over the years.  All you can do is take a certain set of years and average that - but that average will be different from just about any other given set of years.

Hey, did you know that just a few thousand years ago, Manhattan (New York) was covered under a mile of crushing glacier ice?  This current warming cycle has melted the glaciers back by a thousand miles.  Austin has also undergone major changes since the sun's output increased, bringing an end to the last ice age.

Considering the massive climate changes since the last ice age ended, I'm not sure there is any logic in trying to define an 'average'.

  2. There is no average climate. Climate is constantly changing. Think about a grocery store. In the public area, most of the temperature is comfortable to wear shorts and t-shirt. But near the refrigerated section, it is cool to cold, but livable in the t-shirt and shorts. Then, in the deep freezer, going in with t-shirt and shorts would kill a person fairly quickly. Now, the average temp of the store may be 55 degrees (70 for customer area, and 25 degrees in freezer), but this tells someone nothing about how to dress for the entire store. The average really does not apply.

  3. You can find the average climate (latest 30 year norm) of Austin here:
