  1. It is one of those books which seems on the surface to be in favor of casting aside 'traditional' values for the brief and exciting fling, but in actuality the author cleverly squashed such notions by having the principle character meet an untimely end due entirely to her own foolishness.

The main conflicts are comprised of those involving Edna, with herself. Vows of any kind are sacred and once broken they shattered pieces melts away part of the soul and conscience. The character may have 'awakened' as the title suggests, but in reality she died defiled, naked and alone... and she was not some pitiable victim with which we may sympathize.

I liked the book for its very wise lesson: each action has an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, we each will inevitably face the consequences of our own actions.

Also, I liked very much how the title is a visual irony: Edna spends a lot of time with a younger man who's not her husband, begins to slowly think she has 'feelings' for him, imagined herself 'free', leaves the protection and patronage of her man (betrayal, disloyalty), abandons her children (lack of compassion) to chase after a younger guy  and sets herself up in a cottage to life freely, all with her husband's money. Contrary to being awakened, however, she stupidly goes swimming off in the cold water nude and exhausts herself in some emotional fit and drowns.

What a way to go... not.
