The Ayr Meeting halts after three races only due to extreme weather conditions
The halting of the Ayr Meeting 2011 only after three races due to the extreme weather conditions was a disappointment for the trainers, jockeys and of course the bettors. The gushing winds and splashing showers on the field resulted in false patches of grounds
which made racing difficult on the ground which is already known to be trying.
Clerk of the course Emma Marley said: "We had 6mm of rain during the morning and heavy showers during racing which created a few false patches on already heavy going”.
"It was evident that there was water on the track and the right decision was made."
The Ayr Gold Cup is a flat horse race in Scotland in which thoroughbreds aged three years and older and is scheduled in September each year.
The distance that needs to be covered by the participants is six furlongs. It is considered as the most refined and talent packed sprint handicap in Europe.
It is possible for 27 horses to contest at a time.
Ayr Bronze Cup was introduced in 2009 because those eliminated from the Ayr Gold Cup get to participate in the Ayr Silver Cup and thus those disqualified from the Silver get to participate for the Bronze.
The results of the Silver and Bronze Cups indicate the future prospects for the participating horses.
Last year, it was won by Our Jonathan who was being ridden by Franny Norton and was being trained by Kevein Ryan.
The jockeys who got a chance to ride through the tracks before it started raining said:
P J McDonald said: "I think it is the worst I have ridden on on the Flat. I have ridden in jumps races where they have finished quicker and you are just trying to get your horse home safely”.
Jamie Spencer said: "In my opinion it's unraceable. We are splashing through water in places”.
The Irish Cheyenne Red won the Intechnology Services Handicap of the meeting against Shaun Harris’s Mark Anthony who was under Franny Norton, the winner jockey form last year’s Ayr.
Then it was Never Perfect who won the other race of the meeting with Jamie Spencer on a field of five candidates. Finally the third race that also marked the end of the event which originally comprised of eight races was delayed.
Thus, the most awaited and prepared for event ended the most quick as only three races went their way out of a meeting of an eight.
