Is our licence fee used to host these channels?

  1. Whichever radio station that carries the BBC in those other countries pays for the rights to broadcast.  My local public radio pays to broadcast the BBC overnight.

  2. bbcamerica is part of most basic cable packages.

  3. "BBC World Service is funded by government grant and not the TV licence fee. Profits from separate BBC commercial services help to keep the licence fee low."

  4. Since all BBC external broadcasts (TV and radio) are created by the lads at Bush House I suspect that the license fees are used for production costs. But, with respect to the external TV operations, they do recoup part of that money with franchising fees charged to the cable and satellite operators who use those programs. BBC World Service on the radio is free of course and I have been a steady listener since 1949. But, I have learned that my sending any e-mail to the "Beeb" about the World Service results in being placed on a list where they deluge you with solicitations for things like magazine subscriptions and the like. I assume they pick up a bit of money from that as well.
