  3. The Notocord! End of discussion. There is no ventral nerve cord to be protected by the vertabrae. The autonomic nervous system gets some defense from the spine. However the vertabrae protect the NOTOCHORD, (Which is the evolutionary precursor to the spinal cord in all vertebrates, even Humans)
