The BALLAD OF SILVER BELLS

When once I had a silver bell

I played it ding and dong

O ding and dong and ding and dong

I played it all day long

I struck my bell for little kids

Of two and three and four

They laughed and giggled as I played

And wanted more and more

A ding-ding-ding for Alice Dean

A dung-dung-dung for John

A ding and dong and ding and dong

For Petre newly born

Chorus:

When once I had a silver bell

I played it ding and dong

O ding and dong and ding and dong

I played it all day long

I played it when the sky was blue

In July July morn

And ladies stopped half-way to look

And wondered at my tone

I sung for Mary Browne a song

For Ann a dozen more

And to my ding-dong bell they came

A-knocking at the door

Chorus:

When once I had a silver bell

I played it ding and dong

O ding and dong and ding and dong

I played it all day long

And all those kids for whom I played

Are now grown sweet and strong

Dear Alice, John and Petre still

But remember my song

Fair Ann is now but weak and old

And Mary died since long

And all she loved to hear was but

My bell play ding n' dong

Chorus:

When once I had a silver bell

I played it ding-a-dong

O ding-a-dong n' ding-a-dong

I played it all day long

Yours, Jay, 'The Silver Bells'

  1. I am so happy to hear your bells ringing again. When I read these musical poems, I experience a visceral reaction. I have missed you, but we will be together on our ship to Mars.

  2. I have been ruined!!  I can't sing anything else now!

  3. This is perfect! Sings a lovely tune that I am sure I will have stuck in my head all day!

  4. Yes, this ones going to stick and it's pretty good. Thanks. and P.S. don't edit it's great just like it is.

  5. Your bell chimes, ding dong ding

sing many echos of your long ago.

    Very cheery poem.

  6. Superb! I'm so jealous you can do that so well. Hooray someone else who writes lyrically. I just had a Burle Ives flash then. His image came to mind. Very folky.

    Jay please stay

    Don't go away

    Don't go away

    Please stay

    Ring your bell

    And stories tell

    Ring proudly

    Everyday

    Show and tell

    Your silver bell

    Your silver bell

    Will say

    "Me and my bell

    Are here to tell

    Good day

    Just call me Jay"

Just having a quick Quasimodo moment there "the bells, the bells!!"

    Cheers Jellz

  7. I'm glad I read this before I went out to the garden! Now I have a lovely tune in my head...makes the weed-pulling tolerable!

    Thank you!

  8. Wow! Lyrical ballad...? You're clearly THE genius of our generation. Yes 'tis indeed highly memorable.

Still, i'd like to suggest you to change this particular line into something that would rhyme better:

    "And wondered at my tone"

"morn" and "tone" doesn't really rhyme that much. I hope you would try to sort this wee bit of disturbance in order to turn this piece into an impeccable one! =)

    Moon/Myra/Moonbelle.

  9. Dinged and donged your way through this you did in cadence that sung!  Keep ringing those bells, just don't get your's rung to hard though!

  10. Your silver bells rang all day long

in my ears and my head

    Ding-dong-dang I played and sang

with them i went to bed

What an awsome poem!! well done. I Didn't want it to finish. Write more of these stuff and keep your bells ringing!

    *Edit*

There's just one little problem that hurts this great piece. "John" doesn't really rhyme with "born". Try:

    A ding-ding-ding for Alice Dean

    A dung-dung-dung for John

A ding and dong and ding and dong

    For Petre, my dear son

Although I admit the last line i added doesn't flow that smoothly. Anyway that was just a suggestion.

    with love,

    Rid (Lulleh)

  11. Your poem AND you will never be forgotten!!!

    Now....STAY PUT!!!!!

  12. It is lovely Jay

But as I have a slightly out-of-tune cognition I played Chuck Berry's " Ding-A-Ling" tune in my head as I read your verse.

  13. love this great poem

  14. Now if only I could find a music box with that tune...  or maybe have it pressed as a 45 vinyl where it belongs... I think I just whistled the tune from Andy Griffith.. . very entertaining when I'm quiet and only read... and clap cla[p clap at the end.... ... upon rereading I think there is more to this ding-a-ling tune than meets the eye...
