The Bayern Munich team and their World Cup stars reunite; Daniel van Buyten, Arjen Robben out injured
The Bayern Munich squad has not been together for nearly 3 months, not until now, as their key men from the German national squad had been on vacations after the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Now the team has finally united to prepare for the next season.
Some of their training sessions have already been conducted by their head coach Louis van Gaal, but only now will he properly initiate the practice sessions after the German internationals return from vacations. The German team had a pretty successful run at the World Cup, in the end defeating Uruguay to achieve the 3rd position.
The Germans had a marvellous campaign in the World Cup, but that is before they met Spain in the semifinal. They thrashed Australia 4-0 in the opener, but succumbed to a shock 1-0 defeat against Serbia. They then overcame Ghana 1-0. In the Round of 16, they thwarted their archrivals England 4-1, later obliterating Argentina 4-0 in the quarterfinals. After the 1-0 failure against Spain, they competed against the toughened Uruguay side and pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory in the last minutes of the match.
Unfortunately, some misfortune has arisen for Bayern Munich, as their star Belgian centre back Daniel van Buyten has injured himself; he will be out for atleast the next two weeks. Apart from van Buyten, there are other players in the team that have been injured and are on rest.
Players from Bayern Munich played a pivotal role in the success of Germany in the 2010 World Cup. After their original captain, Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, got injured because of a tackle from ex-German and Portsmouth’s defender Kevin Prince Boateng, it was considered by many that the underdogs of the World Cup would lose out early. However, the youngest and most diverse team that Germany had ever sent took the world by surprise.
The Die Mannschaft ruled the fields with Bayern’s players like Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller. The Sports Director Christian Nerlinger has stated, “They’ve all made a really good impression, and if we make good use of the time available, I believe we’ll be in excellent form for the Bundesliga restart. I also think we’ll start the season well”.
On Buyten’s injury, Nerlinger said: “He will be out ten to 14 days”. He also clarified that the team’s doctor had stated that the player was lucky the injury was not serious. “Luckily, this is not a tear,” he said.
Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel, who had a great campaign last season with Bayern reaching the final of Champions League, expressed his happiness at seeing his old teammates again, “I’m happy to be here again. It doesn’t often happen that you’re away from the club for ten weeks. Seeing familiar faces is a good and trusted feeling. It all starts again now”.
There is another bad news for Bayern Munich. Their star Dutch winger Arjen Robben has torn his thigh muscles and will now be in recovery for the next two months. The team’s doctors have brought in their first examination report which says that the injury was in his left thigh and he sustained it while practising. The reports have also said that the recovery time for such an injury is about two months and the rehab would take him a bit more than that.
The doctor on the case, Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, said that the injury was an old hamstring injury that had gotten worse with time, therefore the muscle tear came next.
The world class player has played for Chelsea (15 goals in 67 appearances) and Real Madrid (11 goals in 50 appearances). For Bayern Munich he has 16 goals in 24 appearances to his record.
