I'm looking to invest in a good digital slr. I just don't know which one. I've been looking for a long time and every time i find one i like i read bad reviews that scare me into not buying one. What camera do you have good experience? I need suggestions. How is the Canon Digital Rebel XTi?

  1. It is a fine camera ..

The most bang for the buck is the Nikon D40 with a AF-S 18-55 mm ED lens ... under $470 at Amazon

DSLR's only last for about four to five years before you will be replacing them for a higher technology ... what you are really investing in is the lens system.  Lenses last for decades.

Be careful making your choice because changing camera systems after you have a few lenses and cameras can become very expensive indeed

  2. Go Canon all of the way.  I have owned nothing but Canon cams and have never been let down.

  3. This is both an easy and difficult question! This question is probably in everyone's mind who's trying to get into digital SLRs. My only suggestion is: try them like shoes!

Both Nikon and Canon (probably the top digital SLRs out there) have the highest quality and close in prices. The only difference is probably its compatibility with you. Which camera are you most comfortable using?

With my experience, I started out seeking Nikon, but then realized that their body are often far too big for my hands and I find it easier to operate the Canon. This is certainly a personal choice. Comparing the picture results from both Nikon and Canon though? Both are flawless.

So, my suggestion is to try both. Either borrow someone's, or visit a store and just play around with it and ask a lot of questions. See which one you feel most comfortable using.

I see you are interested in the Canon Rebel XTi (which is a good choice, but they are coming with the new Canon Rebel XSi, basically an upgrade to the Rebel series) so try this out! For Nikon, try the D40 for sure.

Both are budget friendly (this is camera-talking), as in the whole set probably cost your approximately $1000++ (with accessories, and etc.)

Be wise with your choice, because the lenses you are buying for the future are what your camera body can use. It's kind of a hassle to start a lens collection in Nikon and decides to switch to Canon a few weeks/months later :)

  4. Buying the camera is just the half of it... you also need to buy lenses...

Make sure you hold them... when I was looking I did not like how the rebel felt in my hand... I ended up going with nikon...

If I was going to pick a DSLR out for you, I would start you off with a D60 and the 18-200 VR lens.

Remember that the lenses are just as important as the camera body... if not more!
