The best quarterbacks in the NFL
Quarterback is arguably the hardest position to play in professional sports. Here is an in-depth look at some of the top players at the position.
1.Peyton Manning
There are number of reasons why Peyton Manning is such a prolific passer. His solid frame and laser arm obviously jump off the page, but there is much more to his game. Manning’s strongest assets are his high football IQ and profound understanding of the game.
It is no secret across the NFL that Manning’s opponents view him as player and as a coach due to his ability to understand and read defensive schemes. If mistakes are made by defences, those mishaps are transformed into points for the Indianapolis Colts.
Manning does have one downside that pundits will always criticize him for: disappointing postseason results. Greatness in professional sports is measured in championship rings, not regular season stats and wins. Despite winning Super Bowl XLI in 2007 and taking his team to the big dance last year in a losing effort to the New Orleans Saints, he will have to win one or two more rings to be considered alongside some of the league’s superstars who have the bling.
2. Drew Brees
Drew Brees breezed onto this list, after marching his New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl Championship last year. Look for him to rally up his troops for a repeat performance and build up a dynasty.
It’s hard to say that Brees did it all by himself, because the defense played a vital role throughout the entire postseason – none bigger than a game winning interception which send the Indianapolis Colts back home empty handed. The Saints were virtually a one dimensional team that lack balance on offence. Without a solid running game to rely on, Brees was forced to carry his team through the air and with his arm. Even when teams knew he was going to throw the ball, they were unable to stop his high octane offense.
In an offense that preaches short patterns and quick releases, Brees was on point and allowed his receivers to come up with big plays. No question that he was on point last season and seems very comfortable with his surrounding cast.
3. Ben Roethlisberger
Expectations are always high in the city of Pittsburgh. Luckily for Roethlisberger, his pro debut got off to a fast start. He did more then survive his first year and became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Not a bad way to jump start your career.
Now, Roethlisberger is a veteran despite his young age having gained valuable experience in a number of big games. He is extremely big for a quarterback and has deceptive speed for a guy his size. He is a double threat making plays with his arm and his legs, making him very difficult to defend.
However, Pittsburgh’s leader is relying more on his arm, which has opened up the play calling for this franchise – usually known for running the ball. Times have changed in Pittsburgh with Roethlisberger directing traffic.
4. Tom Brady.
Tom Brady has had a smooth transition back to the gridiron since his devastating knee injury back in 2008. However, he has had a rather disappointing season, by his standards and what the fans in New England are accustomed to witnessing. He is still a top Pro Bowl quarterback and the player you want leading your team on Sundays. It’s often hard for a player to come back after an injury and we are hoping that Brady regains his all-star form and begins threading the needle into tight spaces. Look for the Brady bunch to regain their status as an elite team with the NFL.
