1). Iker Casillas
The 29-year-old Spanish world Cup winner is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in football right now. Over the years he has proved to be a real asset for both club and country.
He was the captain of the World Cup Winning Spanish team, and made some brilliant saves during the tournament, including a number of crucial one-on-ones in the final match. As a result Spain managed to become only the second nation, after France, to win
the World Cup and European Championship in the same year. He was also named the tournament’s best stopper.
English goal-keeping legend Gordon Banks once said that if Casillas continued to keep his form, he would retire as the world’s best-ever goalkeeper.
He has amazing reflexes and all the right attributes for a goalkeeper. One of his most memorable saves came against Sevilla in the 2009-10 season, when he dashed from end of the goal to the other and stopped the opposition striker scoring with a full length
dive.
Casillas started playing for the national team from the under-15 level. He is one of the purest Real Madrid players to be found, as he started his career with the club and never left.
He joined their youth program when he was only nine years old; twenty years later he is still there.
He was nicknamed ‘the Saint’ following two penalty shoot-out saves against Ireland in the round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup.
He still has a long career ahead of him, as goalkeepers have been known to play till the age of forty. Most football pundits believe that when he retires, Casillas will leave behind a legacy that will be hard to match.
