The Big Bang - would it have been silent?

...because sound doesn't travel in a vaccuum

If so, shouldn't it be correctly termed the Big Poof ?

  2. I think yes and no. It is true, no sound can travel through space. But, if you inside all of that matter [hypothetiocal] then yes, there would have been sound.

    I think it is named the big bang for the rate at which the universe  expanded.

    But, the big poof is a creative title.

  3. Well, there wasn't a vacuum at the time.  When the big bang happened, it WAS the universe - and if you were there, I imagine it would have been pretty loud.

    This is a bit like the "tree falls in a forest" question.  There were no receptors at the time, and no mass to vibrate even if there was.

    Still, the echoes of the bang (big or little) can be heard today in the white noise of the 3 degree blackbody background.
