The Big Question, A male or female Rat?

Question

Im really excited to possibly be able to get a rat soon, and i have heard you should always get pairs. Is this true? Should i get two?

And im mostly wondering if i should get a male or female. I plan on playing with it all the time.

You should definitely get a pair! They&#039;re very social and should never be alone. Just make sure they&#039;re the same s*x, of course. :P

As for whether you want males or females.. well, that depends on your preference! When they&#039;re young, males and females aren&#039;t much different. They&#039;re always curious and a bit hyper! Difficult to get them to settle down for a skritch. As the get older, girls tend to stay very curious and playful, while males tend to mellow out and aren&#039;t as energetic as girls. They like to just chill out on your lap or shoulder on the couch. :P Males sometimes mark with urine, though, which some people dislike. You get used to it, it&#039;s actually a compliment! ;P

Anyway, BOTH sexes have their merits, you just have to choose which is right for you!

there is ups and downs about both sexes.

males: some people don&#039;t like males because they have a stronger odor and you can tell that they are boys (if you konw what i mean) and if you do get a boy don&#039;t get 2 because they will fight most likely. the ups about males are that usually they are more calm and laidback (cuddly), and sometimes less aggresive too.

females: females donot have as much of an odor as males do, they are a  little more &quot;awake&quot; they and stuff. also girls do alot better in pairs and actually it&#039;s best to keep girls in pairs, so they have some one to play with and so they aren&#039;t lonely.   good luck1!!!! hope this helped

Well if you are going to get a pair you should get a male and a female so that they can breed and you can have more rat buddies. But if you only get one you should get a female because they aren&#039;t as fiesty.

Well to start you should always get more than one rat.  They are very social animals and will get very lonely by itself.  So is is very smart to get two or three rats.

Now I have always had male rats, They are a lot more social and love to be held.  They will be a lot more calm then a female.  So I would go with a male, but then you have the down falls of having males.  They will pee a lot more because they will mark and they get oily skin.  So then there are female rats.  They are a little more athletic and don&#039;t stink as much.  They will also not become as big as the males.

also you might want to know about markings and food because you might be getting rats soon.  ONE THING YOU NEVER DO IS USE CEDER OR PINE IT VERY STRONG AND HAS THINGS THAT  CAN LEED TO BACTERIAL DISEASES.  You should also give your rats a good diet: which will consist of grains, fruits, veggies, and so on.

i had a female rat when i was younger she was the best pet she would play and even sit inside a jacket and go to sleep for a bit

Do not get a pair- you&#039;ll have a million rats. Females don&#039;t smell quite as bad as males. Otherwise it doesn&#039;t really matter.
