The Blue Foil Squad wins the Men’s Foil Team at the 2011 European Fencing Championships
After the gold medal victories in the Individual contests, the Italian squad featured their first gold medal victory in the Team events as they won the gold medal in the Men’s Foil Team event on the fifth day of the 2011 European Fencing Championships, in
Sheffield.
The President of Italian Fencing Federation, George Poor, was also there with the two heads of delegations, Paul Azzi and Andrea Cipressa, to see the Team events of the fifth day of the championships. He said, "It was a memorable day for the blue screen.
The extraordinary success of not only on winning the European title twice, but also the quality of fencing is expressed by our athletes in Foil and in the Sabre. I like to emphasize the involvement of all the athletes of the delegation who were present in
the stands cheering, sign of a peaceful, united and probably also for this reason, a winner."
The number one seeded Blue squad consisted of Andrea Cassara, Andrea Baldini, George Avola and Valerio Aspromonte, who started their day with pool matches. Winning all the bouts in the pool matches, they started their table matches from quarter-final, as
they were given an automatic bye to the table of 16. The Blue squad faced Polish fencers in the quarter-final round.
After the nine-minute bouts, the Blues defeated Poland after hitting the final 45th hit with a loss of 38 touches against them.
The German squad was the next goal of the Blue fencers in the semi-final round. They beat down Germany with an amazing score of 45-31 touches. French team was there to face the Blues in the play-off, who reached at the final by defeating the most powerful
Russian squad after a tough competition of 41-45.
The Blues felt no difficulty in eliminating the French group in the final round as they were defeated with a score-line of 45-28.
The coach, Stephen Wen, said, "It’s hard not to be repetitive these guys do not stop to give the show fencing and success for Italy. For my part I can do is congratulating them for what they have been able to express the platforms, both in the individual
in that team and not only in these European.”
The Blue squad has increased their momentum for 2011 Catania World Championship and it would be interesting to see how the Italian fencers live up to their tradition.
