The Borg have assimilated many useful cultures. Perhaps the cybermen are there in an echo.

I did notice that the Vogons of hgttg fame, pre-date the borg with a similar battle cry "Resistance is useless". They must've been assimilated too.

Cybermen are easier to kill. The Borg can adapt. I would say that's pretty original. :-)
