The British Open champion Ernie Els confirmed to play the Frys.com Open
The reigning British Open champion Ernie Els has confirmed to appear in this year’s Frys.com Open, according to the tournament officials’ statement released on Wednesday.
Els is currently scheduled to play the RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club from July 26 to 29, 2012.
After reaching Ontario, Canada, on Tuesday, he met Duke Butle, the President of Frys.com Open, and told him about his plans for this year’s event at the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin.
Els said that he wanted to return to the field where he had a great experience. He tied for the fourth position with a 14-under par tournament score, three behind the champion Bryce Molder.
Therefore, it will be a great opportunity for him to make another start at the tournament and make an effort of improving his track record in the area.
"I enjoyed playing last year and look forward to seeing my friend Hasso Plattner (SAP co-founder) at CordeValle," he said.
Els has been in the headlines since he recorded the remarkable victory in The Open Championship last week.
Right after his win, he announced that he planned to return to the United States to meet his family rather than flying directly to Canada. As a result, the tournament organizers thought that the major champion gave an indication of his plans to skip the
event this year.
However, Els cleared everything after confirming that he was thinking of reaching the venue on Tuesday, rather than Monday.
While talking to the media after getting only five practice holes on Wednesday, he said that he was confident to make another strong start at the Canadian Open, despite having a tiring schedule in the past couple of days. "I feel very fresh," he said.
In the meantime, the US Open champion Webb Simpson has opted out from this week’s tournament because of his personal commitments back at home.
According to the recent reports, Simpson called the tournament organizers and confirmed his exit, as he wanted to spend some with his family and friends.
Therefore, the Canadian Open is now left with only one major winner – that is Els.
