The British Women’s water polo team captures stunning victory over Greece - 2011 FINA World League
The British Women’s water Polo team has captured a historical victory over Greece 10-9 at the 2011 FINA World League in Barcelona on Friday, May 13.
This emphatic victory was the result of the most professional, dedicated and combined performance of the British Women’s water polo team in Barcelona.
Most importantly, Chloe Wilcox, Frankie Snell, Fran Leighton and Ciara Gibson Byrne scored two goals each for the British team, whereas Fiona McCann and Alex Rutlidge scored one goal each in the vital match against the 2004 silver medallist.
Meanwhile, Rutlidge stated that they are immensely happy and satisfied with their overall performance in this vital match against Greece. She went on to comment that they cannot believe they have done it and that it has been an awesome and intriguing start
for them in the World League.
The Greece Women’s water polo team does have a solid pedigree in water polo. They were the runners up in the European Championships and earned the bronze medal in the World League last year.
Rutlidge confessed this victory will certainly lift up the confidence of their entire team to a great extent.
“We are delighted with the result. It’s the first time we have beaten Greece. It is a great start to the World League,” said Rutlidge.
Greece were cruising along 9-7 in the third quarter of the match but the persistence and strength of the British Women’s water polo team saw them retaliate to clinch the match by 10-9.
The way the British assembled themselves and fought hard to win the match against Greece, was a stunning and remarkable display that entertained the spectators at Barcelona yesterday.
The World Class Programme Manager for Water Polo, Joanna Wray said, “That was an absolutely brilliant result against a very strong team. The girls showed amazing determination to come back from being 9-6 down. This result gives us confidence for the rest
of the competition, against two more quality teams.”
Joanna admitted the hard work that the whole British Women’s water polo team has been putting in is indeed starting to pay off right now.
The World League is a renowned event in water polo after the World Championships and Olympics.
Importantly, it will provide an excellent opportunity to the British Women’s water polo team to prepare themselves for the London Olympic Games in 2012.
The World League will decide the top two teams in the water polo for the Super Final to be held at Tianjin, China from June 14-19 this year.
It will be interesting to see how the British Women’s water polo team is able to carry forward their winning momentum into the next tournament.
