  1. It won't be on DVD for awhile. I believe I read somewhere that it might be after 2012, so it will be some time. Go see it live- it's so much better live than just seeing it in a movie form!

  2. Sometime around or after 2014. A movie based on the musical Wicked has been confirmed.

    From interviews with Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked, the basis for the musical Wicked.

    Interview#1 9 March 2008

    According to Maguire, there are plans to bring out a film version of “Wicked” in the year 2014. “That’s the 10-year anniversary of its Broadway debut,” he said, “which is exactly what happened when the play ‘Chicago’ came out as a film a few years ago. Since ‘Wicked’ is breaking attendance records all over the world, there’s no need to rush a film out now.”

    Interview#2 March 2008 (sometime before the first)

    Q: What was your reaction when they first talked to you about your novel Wicked being made into a musical? Has anyone ever asked you about it being made into a film?

    GM: Within 10 days of the book's publication in the US, I started to get film offers. I had three and a half years' worth of film scripts, each one of which was worse than the one before!

    When that interest began to erode (Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings hadn't come out yet) and the notion of a Broadway play came up instead, really in my heart of hearts I just thought [*singing and leaping from his chair*] 'Broadway!'. What was not to love about it?

    There will eventually be a film of Wicked the musical but probably not for four or five years.

    And from playbill.com

    Marc Platt has extended his contract with Universal Pictures for five years, according to Variety.

    Marc Platt Productions currently has several projects of interest to theatre plans in the works, including a film version of the international hit Wicked, a remake of the 1973 Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice film "Jesus Christ Superstar" and a new motion picture about the life of the late composer George Gershwin.

    Universal Pictures production president Donna Langley told the industry paper, "Our goal now is absolutely to make the Wicked film, but much like Judy Craymer wouldn't give up screen rights to Mamma Mia! until the stage show had reached its pinnacle, Marc and Stephen Schwartz are very mindful of the right timing. But we're dying to do it."

    Platt told Variety that he and Wicked co-producer David Stone are currently in "early movie talks" with the studio. Winnie Holzman, who penned the Tony-nominated book for Wicked, will write the film's screenplay. No casting has been mentioned.

    ==============================

    Wicked is much better live than any recording or DVD could ever do it justice. The cast recordings maybe, but no movie will ever properly convey the emotions the live show does. So go buy tickets instead of waiting for the cheap alternate in the next 6 years!
