The CAVB congress in Khartoum proves to be great success – Volleyball News
The 2011 African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB), in collaboration with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) organised a congress in Khartoum, Sudan, on Thursday, December 8, 2011. The assembly was officially opened by the President of FIVB, Jizhong
Wei. The representatives of some 47 national federations, which is a record number in the history of the congress, gathered at the Corinthia Hotel in Khartoum.
The CAVB President, Dr Amr Elwani, addressed the attendees and delivered a welcome speech to start things off. He took a lot of pleasure in greeting guests of honour, which included the FIVB President, FIVB 1st executive vice-president and NORCECA president
Cristóbal Marte, CEV president André Meyer, FIVB executive vice-president and FIVB executive vice-president and CSV president Dr Ary Graca.
The Governor of Khartoum, Sekek Mohamed Ali, and the Sudanese Olympic Committee vice president Al Fateh Abdelal also showed up at the congress and expressed interest in the development of challenging sport of volleyball.
The Sudanese Volleyball Federation (SVF) set up excellent arrangements for the congress and for that the CAVB President especially thanked everyone involved in the feat. He appreciated the hard work and great effort of all members of SVF. Moreover, Dr Amr
Elwani praised the attendance of the record number of national federations that shows the great interest of the African countries to be a part of the big effort to promote volleyball in the region.
Meanwhile, the President of FIVB Mr. Wei gave a speech at the opening ceremony. He shared his experience of visiting Sudan some 30 year ago and compared it with the current situation. In his view, there has been substantial amount of progress since then.
He stated: “It is another Sudan now and the presence of this big number of national federations is further proof of African solidarity. The FIVB Development Fund, which was implemented a few years ago, has reflected positively in Africa in terms of development
opportunities and progress and therefore we need all the national federations in Africa to work hard to use this fund positively and also to work hard to encourage the local authorities to support volleyball because they will be the main tool to grow the sport
in each country.”
He concluded his speech by saying that upcoming CAVB elections, which are scheduled to be held in Sudan, should be democratic.
In this regard, the most important items on the agenda were the final approval of the Congress file, which included the list of candidates for the elections.
Different matters of importance were brought into Mr. Wei’s notice. The financial report of CAVB was also discussed during the congress. The assembly ended on a good note and proved to be great success for volleyball in Africa.
