The Calgary Flames defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 – NHL Recap
The Calgary Flames beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday. It was an exciting game, as both teams are still not assured of a National Hockey League play-off spot, as a win for either would help their cause.
Both teams were even in terms of goal attempts during the course of the first two periods. The Flames outscored the Blue Jackets in each of the first two periods, as they scored four goals in comparison to the two goals. The final period was dominated by
the Blue Jackets who scored a goal, but in the end fell short by a single goal. The Flames won the game 4-3. Olli Jokinen, centre for the Flames, was named the Star of the Game, as he scored the opening goal for his team.
The Blue Jackets got off to a flying start, as they came up with early shots on goal. The Blue Jackets with the passage of time got aggressive and they finally scored in the fourth minute through Craig Rivet from a well placed flick-shot to get into the
lead.
The Flames also came up with decent pieces of play that saw them coming across good scoring chances. However, it was not until the 9th minute that the Flames scored through Olli Jokinen from a flick-shot to level the scores.
The Flames kept on piling pressure and they scored once again in the very same minute to get into the lead. The goal was scored by the Flames’ Captain Jarome Iginla from a quick fired shot that went quickly into the back of the net.
The period ended with the Flames leading 2-1, as the teams went into over-time. During the course of the period, the Flames made 8 goal attempts, as the Blue Jackets came up with 11 shots on goal.
The Blue Jackets were quick off the blocks, as they scored early on to level the score. The goal was scored by Antoine Vermette from a brilliant back-hand shot.
The ninth minute haunted the Blue Jackets, as the Flames scored through Rene Bourque from a superb back-hand shot to get back into the lead. The goal was scored during the power-play which continued, as the Flames scored once again in the 11th
minute through Curtis Glencross from a decent strike to double their advantage.
The period ended with the Flames leading 4-2. During the course of the period, the Flames made 16 goal attempts, as the Blue Jackets managed 13.
The final 20 minutes of play saw the Blue Jackets completely dominating, as they out-shot the Flames 16 to four. However, they scored the only goal in the seventh minute through Jan Hejda from a powerful strike to cut the lead to a single goal.
The period saw the Blue Jackets constructing some brilliant pieces of play, but they were unable to benefit from them, as the period ended with the Flames winning the game 4-3.
