The Carnegie Challenge Cup 2011 unveils the champion on August 27 – Rugby League news
The league leaders Wigan Warriors meet the underdogs Leeds Rhinos to settle the battle of Challenge Cup 2011 on Saturday, August 27 at Wembley amidst the audience at Headingley Carnegie.
The Warriors march into the final showdown of the Challenge Cup, aspiring to maintain their winning-strike that had continued for 13 previous encounters that attaches even stronger hopes to their Wembley dream. On the other hand, the Rhinos who are considered
the second best of the two franchises in question, has failed to display their true potential with their weak fitness profile.
Records reveal that Wigans were unable to reach up to the Challenge Cup final since 1998. This realisation of their dream is taking place after 13 years that justifies their want to bag the long awaited Challenge Cup glory.
Leeds have reached up to the final showdown for four successive years but their dream of having the Challenge Cup under their belt is still on the waiting. The wounds of the 2010 Challenge Cup final’s massive defeat of 8-30 against the Warrington Wolves
are still fresh.
However, being able to make it to the final the very next year, is also an achievement in its own accord, which has been acknowledged by the franchise’s players alike.
The last training session of the Wigans was on Friday, August 26 and Andy Farrell, the ex-skipper of the English squad was also there while the teams were practising for the final showdown and will be there for the big game as well.
While speaking highly of Farrell, whose presence was branded “special” for Wigans coach, McDermott Maguire said, “Faz came and watched training. He has had a fair bit to do with our team in the time I've been here. Faz helps out where he can. He's a great
person to have around. He's a great ambassador for Wigan and to have him around the players is special.”
Maguire also shared that his squad already knows his finalised pick for the Challenge Cup battle on Saturday but the official announcement will not be made an hour prior to the kick-off of the match.
