The Championship Open 2012: Darren Clarke’s disappointing day 1
The first day of the British Championship Open came to an end at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Course. The four-day event started from the 19th of July and is going to end on the 22nd of July. Players from all over the world came
for this auspicious event to fight for the Claret Jug.
After the first day, some of the players have been successful in living up to their fans’ hopes. Others have failed badly. The list of players who have had a very bad start at the Lytham includes the Northern Irish professional golfer, Darren Clarke.
This year Clarke was looking to defend his title at the Open, as he was able to bag the Claret Jug last year. This year at Lytham, things are not going according to his plan.
Clarke had a bad first round. He carded three bogeys on the front nine, on the second, third and eighth hole. These made his score three-over par.
His back nine was about the same, but he started off with a birdie on the tenth hole. Nonetheless, it did him no good as the birdie was followed by a bogey, on the eleventh. Clarke carded three consecutive bogeys starting from the fourteenth.
His score on the back nine was three-over par and his total score climbed up to six-over par. Clarke finished the day tied at 143 with six other players.
After the end of round one, in an interview, he talked about his game. He said, “Coming up the last I thought how did I manage to win this. I don't think you could publish my thoughts”.
“It's The Open - the biggest and best championship in the world - and the course is so benign, but I couldn't save or gain any momentum. It was a bad day at the office. The crowds were great and showed their support, but unfortunately I couldn't reciprocate,”
he added.
This was one of the worst starts for the 43-year-old. He will have to give an extraordinary performance just to save himself from missing the cut. There are still three days left in the tournament. Anything could happen in these three days.
