The Chiefs secure upset victory over top spot Blues - Super Rugby News
The Chiefs outclass the top-ranked New Zealand based Blues by 16-11 in a Super Rugby match played on June 4, in Auckland. The defeat could cost the Blues their third position at the point tables if Crusaders win their next match of Super Rugby.
The Chiefs started off the game with nothing to lose in the current season of Super Rugby as they are already out of the playoffs. Clan Donald of the Chiefs played a major role in his team’s stunning victory over the Blues. He scored 11 points for his side
including three successful penalties and one conversion. Tana Umaga also helped his side with a well executed try during the second half.
However, the big guns of the Blues remained silent throughout the game. They scored six points in the first half and added just one try in the second. Blues made the tough decision of resting their fly-half Stephen Brett. They also made a few changes to
their starting line-up as they shuffled Luke McAlister to the pivot’s position. The Chiefs also made a change in their team as they welcomed their offensive player, Tana Umaga, who made a comeback from an injury.
Chiefs captain Muliaina, was very happy with his team’s effort. After winning the match he told media that, "It was great. Anytime you come up State Highway One (between Auckland and the Chiefs' base at Hamilton) you know you're going to be in for a massive
game so it was great for us tonight.''
He added, "I thought we played some good rugby in that first half. We were probably a little bit conservative in that second half but we got the result in the end.''
On the other hand Auckland captain, Jerome Kaino, was saddened with his team’s poor display and said, "It was really disappointing. The Chiefs really came out to play and pressured us tonight and deserved the win. We wanted to play the territory game but
you can't play the territory game without the ball.''
The Blues have a real tough game ahead in the Super Rugby season as they take on the Crusaders on June 11.
