Liang Wen-Chong can make any one sing his praises, even the Australian PGA defending champion, Robert Allenby.
The weather was perfect, the Joe Kirkwood Cup was standing by and the gleaming $ 270,000 prize money was all-set. With riches calling every man and with an exclusive ready for action golfing field, the Australian PGA championship began on the 9th of December 2010.
From the sturdy queue, one 39-year-old golfer stepped into the Hyatt Regency Coolum with the hopes of defending his throne, Robert Allenby. Allenby is the winner of the NedBank Golf Challenge from the year 2009 and bagged the Australian Open, the Australian PGA Championship and the MasterCard Masters all in 2005. The Australian also managed to grab the Australian PGA Championship in 2009.
The defending champion was thus all geared up and discovered that he was grouped with two golfers, Liang Wen-Chong and John Daly. Until last week, he did not have any idea who this Chinese golfer was but now, all the Australian does nothing but go into raptures over Liang.
Wen-Chong is the holder of 17 professional titles and is currently on the Asian tour, Japan Golf Tour, OneAsian Tour and the European Tour. Liang is the winner of the Luxehills Chengdu Open and the Thailand Open this year and won the Media China Classic in 2009.
According to the current leader board, Wen-Chong carded a 66 and 68 after two rounds of the tournament and is at the 13th place. As for Allenby, a 70 from the first round and then an impressive 68 from the second round have placed the Australian golfer on the T20.
“He is an amazing golfer and a remarkably nice guy,” Allenby said.
He said Liang can win any tournament. Allenby said that the Wen-Chong has outstanding putting abilities and can conquer any green provided the blade follows his orders.
Considering the statistics, Allenby stands rather too far to think about defending his own title and as for Liang, he will probably need a lot of hard work to grab the first place but the Australian is so fazed by the Chinese radiance that he considers Liang as ‘The’ man to beat.
The tournament is currently being led by Aaron Townsend with a minus 13 that has been carded through a collection of a 68 from the first round and a 67 from the second. With the previously mentioned Australian ruling the apex all by himself, the second place is held by Bobby Gates with minus 12.
“Nothing ticked him off at the field, not even John Daly. If that didn’t happen, then that was awesome,” Allenby said.
