Does anyone have a large picture of the Maben Family Coat of Arms? I need this for a social studies project and can not seem to find any place with a picture of the coat of arms.

  1. Any number of people on this board can give you links to websites peddling coats of arms based on a surname.   However, they don't belong to surnames.  Anytime you go into someone's home and see a walnut plaque with a coat of arms and family history on it, what you are looking at is one that was issued to someone with their surname and might not even be related.  Anybody who understands anything about genealogy or heraldry will not laugh as it is not polite to laugh at people in their own homes.

Coats of arms were in most countries granted to an individual and are passed down through the legitimate direct male line of descent.

Actually, there might have been, for instance, 15 different men with the same surname, not all necessarily related, each granted their own coat of arms, all different.

No one peddler who sells them on the internet, at shopping malls, at airports, in magazines or solicit by mail will have all 15.  No way!  They don't need to in order to sell to gullible people.  The only time they will have more than one is if more than one person with the same surname from different national origins were granted one, then they will have one of each and there might have been several of each.

Now, it is quite possible for a person to have more than one in their family tree.  That doesn't mean they are entitled to any one of them. What it means, if after doing research, they find more than one ancestor granted a coat of arms, it is quite legitimate for them to put a picture of their ancestors' coats of arms in any book they have printed or even published on their family history.

If an American has any English lines that goes back to early colonial days in the American South, they have a very good possibility of finding several in their family tree. Actually some in the South have the one their ancestor brought over from England 300-400 years ago. As a rule, they don't display them.  They aren't the least bit good for buying groceries or GASOLINE. Walmart won't take them.

See the links below, one from the British College of Arms (they grant coats of arms and are the ultimate authority).  The other is from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Society.  Please print off the 2 links and give them to your Social Studies teacher.  Also feel free to give to him/her what I have posted here.
