What exactly caused the crash of 1929? What led to the crash? Can it be repeated today?

  1. Mostly speculation, with a number of other issues like investors being highly leveraged (i.e. borrowing up to 2/3rds of the value of stocks invested in).  Due to the high leverage, there was more loans outstanding than money in circulation.  The stock market could 'crash' again today, but there are safeguards built in to suspend trading in period of rapid declines.
