Question:

The Crescent kick?

Have you ever pulled off a crescent kick in sparring/competition. If you have the time for a cresent kick surely it is more wiser to perform a safer and maybe more efective roundhouse.

  1. you have inward and outward crescent kicks. Most people use it in combinations with punches because of its range and also your body can still stay up right. It can also be deceptive, because while throwing punches, you crescent kicks can catch your opponent by surprise because you don't have to lean back to do it and so less telegraphing your crescent kick techniques.

Even though it can be effective if you use it correctly combine with punches, I personally do not enjoy this particular technique. I find it lack a lot of power compare to round house or hook kick. But then, again, it could just me. Sometimes, not all techniques suit everyone. It is up to you to train everything and then, choose what you are most comfortable with to fight in the street.

  2. If youre talking about wadokai karate, which youre probably not, that is the style i do. I tried an inner crescent kick once in a competition, I couldnt get my leg to stop (lol) and it hit him in the ear, knocked him right over, and i got disqualified. I wouldnt recommend it lol

  3. i wouldn't try any really flashy kicks during competition... unless you're being scored for flashiness... meh, point sparring is for pansies.

  4. for me, inside crescents are my easiest kick. roundhouse just gets on my nerves cuz i gotta turn my hip over, with inside crescents all ya gotta do it pick you leg up and bring it in.

outside crescent would probaly be a challenge though!

  5. but if all you throw is roundhouse kicks they are not effective as opponents will know whats coming and block them.

They can be used for dragging an opponents arms down and landing forward with a punch.

  6. No I haven't.

  7. As learned in bujinkan ninjutsu any kick above the waist is pointless.

  8. I don't do exactly a cresent, I do more of an axe kick. It's tighter (Not as big of a swing) and faster. I use it every sparring match. (I do ATA (American Taekwondo Association) and WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) sparring.) It works every time. When you get good height and speed they never see it coming and they either take it right in the face or thr forehead. My last match I KOed someone with it. The reason this kick works is that it comes in on the inside and straight up so you can't see it coming unlike a round kick. I'm a girl and am about 5' 3" but my axe can hit harder than 500 pounds per inch... To pull it off however you need to be flexible enough to get it over your opponents head. (FYI, basically an axe is a cresent but straight up with a bent knee and then straight down with an extended leg, hit with you ball or heel.)

  9. i have hit some crescent kicks in sparring, the ones that go inside to outside not outside to inside, and i have landed them on the face and jaws of some opponents. But you can't say that one kick is just better than another, a round house is used so often that if u throw it most people see it comming. when i hit a crescent the guy is almost always surprised cause he never saw that kind of kick comming, oh and a inside to outside crescent protects your body as u kick, a roundhouse leaves your body open for attack especialy if u drop your hands

  10. most people expect a roundhouse kick in sparring use different kicks surprise them.

  11. I study isshinryu style, and yes I've pulled off a crescent kick in sparring, but in my style we use it more to break an opponent's guard, to create openings for a more powerful follow-up technique like a roundhouse or back kick.
