The Crested Butte stop of Subaru Freeskiing World Tour cancelled due to low snow conditions
The lack of snow has forced the event organisers to cancel the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour stop at Crested Butte, Colorado.
The event was scheduled to run at the site from March 7-11, but the low snow conditions at the resort convinced the event organisers to take the difficult decision for safety reason.
“We focus on safety first for our competitors,” said Event Director Bryan Barlow. “It’s not worth jeopardizing the well-being of our athletes to hold the event this year. We try to work with Mother Nature the best we can and have already postponed this event
in hopes of more snow. Year-to-year we need to maintain a certain level of consistency from event to event in terms of snowpack and what is needed for the skiers to showcase what is freeskiing today.”
The Crested Butte stop is one of the most anticipated stop of the big mountain freeskiing series every year. The event had provided a heavy dose of thrilling action in the previous years and was known was its immense support of the sport.
However, the unusually low amount of snow in the region this year has made the steep rocky terrain on the mountain has made it quite perilous. The event organisers have decided to play it safe instead of taking an unnecessary risk and putting the life of
the competitors and resort workers in danger.
While the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour organisers had initially planned to postpone the event to a later date, they later decided to drop the idea in favour of focusing on the rest of the events that are scheduled for this season.
With the cancellation of the Crested Butte stop of the Tour, the overall Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Champion will be crowned on the basis of the best-three of the five event scores this season.
The competitors are feeling bummed about the cancellation of the Tour’s stop in Crested Butte, though they fully respect the decision taken by the event organisers.
The big mountain freeskiing series will head to Snowbird, Utah, where its next event will run from March 14-19.
