Parris asks Abigail (who is his niece) what they were doing in the woods with Tituba and whether there was any witchcraft involved.  He fears his daughter (Betty), who was with Abigail and some of the other girls while dancing in the woods, has been affected by witchcraft.

He also questions her about her character, since there are rumors going around that she is less than pure, especially since she was fired by John Proctor's wife.
