The Drawing of Lots (DOL) of men’s teams for the Olympic Qualification Tournament was completed in Bulgarian City Sofia on Friday, January 20, 2012.
The DOL was due after the successful completion of the pre-qualification tournaments in November, 2011. The Drawing of Lots for the women’s tournaments already took place in Ankara, Turkey this past Saturday on January 15, while men’s teams were drawn on
Friday.
A total of eight men’s teams advanced from the pre-qualification stage of the European tournament and went through the DOL process on Friday. The teams were assigned to two pools by the Drawing of Lots. The pool composition is as follows:
Pool A – Spain, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Slovenia Pool B – Finland, Italy, Germany, and Slovakia
The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BVF) set up excellent environment at the DOL ceremony, which was attended by the officials of Confederation European de Volleyball (CEV), Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, and large number of fans.
The groups of the teams were finalised in the afternoon thereby providing all Volleyball fans with an interesting gathering given the great value and strength of the sides that will be fighting for one ticket to make it to the amazing Summer Olympiad in
London.
The Drawing of Lots was carried out in such a way that the highest-ranked teams from the last edition of the CEV Volleyball European Championship did not get the place in the same group.
In the light of this rule, Serbia has been placed in Pool A, while the Italian team has been grouped with Finland, Germany, and Slovakia in Pool B. Furthermore, the teams stemming from the same pre-qualification tournament were also assigned to different
Pools.
The Olympic Qualification Tournament will get the green light in the month of May as per the announced plan of CEV. The final stage of the qualifying process will reveal the winner of Olympic ticket. Only one team out of eight contenders will settle for
the Olympic berth.
On the other hand, the women’s tournament will run in the same fashion, eventually promoting one lucky team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
