"Science is an integral part of culture. It's not this foreign thing, done by an arcane priesthood. It's one of the glories of the human intellectual tradition." -- Stephen Jay Gould

We live in an age where scientific advances -- in computers, biotechnology, and nanotechnology to name just a few -- come and go with increasing speed. Yet, some observers maintain that young Americans have lost interest in the study of basic science. Why do you think this is the case?

Discuss your opinion as to why many students have lost interest in studying science. Be sure to support your position with arguments and reasons drawn from your studies or personal observations.

  1. Young Americans have lost interest in science because teenagers do not have the capabilities to think far into the future.  Their self confidence and esteem may not be fully developed and they look for approval from their peers who are concerned about the same thing. With so much change through teen years, teens are worried about a million things that is too difficult to process. When they wake up in the morning, they won't be thinking about science discoveries, but about what outfit will make them look the cutest. So many teens are insecure and science won't help them become accepted.

  2. because they are more interested in s*x education rather than science education.

    right or wrong?

  3. Our culture doesn't venerate scientists or pay them well. As a whole we are more interested in entertainment than science. Science is for people who like to work and think. Neither of these are high on the average person's list of fun things to do.

  4. Because entertainment, materialism and physical appearance have become the most important things in todays society. Science, technology, and intelligence will eventually prosper as ideas of what it means to be "elite" and what is really important will change. Chaos will begin to change as entropy continues. In the end only that which is truly important will survive while that which is not will die.

  5. I'm a high school student. I like science, but for most kids, they get bored by it because they usually don't see the point of it.    They think that theres no connection between it and anything they're interested in.
