She is 4 yrs old and went to the Dentist for a checkup and although her teeth are in excellent condition he said that she has an enamel abnormality and the enamel is just sliding off her teeth and the same will happen with fillings and she will probably end up having her teeth capped when she is older. Will this condition happen with her second teeth and is there anything we can do to help? She eats very healthily and only drinks water and has no discolouration on her teeth

  1. Can you remember if the condition diagnosed was called "Amelogenesis Imperfecta?"  If so,It can affect both primary and permanent teeth, unfortunately.

If her permanent teeth are affected, most likely they will need to have full coverage crowns on them.  The layer beneath the enamel is the dentin.  That is where all of the nerves are so she could end up in a situation where something as simple as rinsing, eating or smiling on a cold day can be extremely painful.

Was the dentist a pediatric dentist?

  2. Sounds a bit odd to say the least.  A sweeping statement based on her baby teeth.  Poor little girl.

The enamel on these first teeth is softer than that on the permanent teeth will become.

I would get a second opinion even I had to pay to see a specialist and go armed with questions, ask for advice and an explanation
