The Detroit Tigers back in series after over-powering New York Yankees 4-2 - MLB Update
The American League’s Detroit Tigers romped to a 4-2 victory in the second outing against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park on Tuesday, May 3 to level the four-game series 1-1.
Detroit’s starter, Brad Penny began the outing in brilliant fashion holding the Yankees scoreless in the first inning. It proved a helpful start for the sluggers as they created pressure with an early two runs lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Magglio Ordonez scored one by touching a grounder for an RBI single after receiving two strikes. Scott Sizemore was at third base when Miguel Cabrera chipped a sacrifice fly for the second run.
Penny restricted the Yankees until the fourth inning when he gave his first run to Russell Martin. It was the only run that Penny allowed along with two walks in his six innings spell. As the Tigers won their thirteenth game of the season, Penny also recorded
his second win that moved him to 2-3 with a 5.23 ERA.
Penny was pleased to perform at the level of expectations of the Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland.
Brad expressed his excitement and said, "They had me on the hook. I am around 50 pitches in the second inning, so I have to come over the plate. I have no choice. Luckily, they were pounding it in the ground tonight. ... It is a tough line up. You've got
to work."
The Tigers were one run ahead in the fifth when Austin Jackson and Sizemore added a RBI single each to take the lead to 4-1. It was the first run, which Scott scored after his come-back in Detroit. He also touched three hits to take the Tigers over the Yankees
in a phenomenal manner.
Jim Leyland appreciated the efforts that the batters displayed in front of more than twenty thousand spectators.
Leyland told reporters, "I'm not going to sit here tonight and say, Hey, we're out of our little slump. That's foolish. But I am going to say that I do believe in contagious.... I think the guys were really pumped up for Magglio. Maggs had a smile on his
face."
The Yankees’ Mark Teixeira hit his eighth homer of the season, but it did not bring a positive result for the club as until now the Tigers had a strong hold on the game.
The Yankees’ starter, Charles Carsten Sabathia, gave four-runs over ten hits and allowed three walks over seven innings. His six strike-outs could not save him from his second loss in four starts. The reliever Drew Robertson did not gave way any runs in
the last inning.
