what is the difference between blu-ray and hd-dvd?

does all movies hold up to 1080p?

Some of the earlier Bluray discs were only 720p.  Most (if not all) of the new Bluray discs are full HD (1080p).  

Blu-ray won the format war.  HD-DVD is no longer being manufactured.  HD movies only come in Blu-ray.  The difference was that Blu-ray had much more space and was a new technology where as HD-DVD was just a souped-up DVD.

Blu-ray looks amazing and it is just that simple.  Full HD, 50 gigs, tons of extra features, Blu-ray is the media of the future (the next 5 - 10 years).

Yes, the BluRay disks have twice the storage which COULD allow extra content. But take the "Blade Runner - Directors Cut"  package. The HD-DVD set had 5 disks. The BluRay set - had 5 disks.

BluRay disks are actually BD Java programs. Each new disk has to be 'booted' which is why these players are so slow compared to a standard DVD player.  HD-DVD is a simpler and cheaper disk to create  and is not a program.

Toshiba was behind the HD-DVD and they have abandoned it. Sony is behind the BluRay format and has raised prices on disks and players since Toshiba announced it was dropping the format.
