Hello. I am going to the DR next week and I would just like some people to sum up what I should do. I am staying in Puerto Plata and I am staying in a all inclusive hotel so if you could throw some ideas at me that would be great. What should I eat/not eat? Drink/not drink? And what should I avoid totally? Any info would be great. Thanks a lot.

  1. You already made the biggest mistake by booking an all-inclusive.  The real fun and really nice beaches are away from the hospital band prisons.  Try going to Sosua, Cabarete, Rio San Juan, and Las Terenas to the East - and/or Luperon and Punta Rusia to the West.  Cabarete has nice restaurants right on the beach in the evenings, and Las Terenas is great as well.

I fell sorry for the people that have to stay at all-inclusive places, there are so many nice things to see outside.  Most of the time the food is better outside and you will meet more interesting people and see nicer beaches.  Just rent a car and take off.  I just got back from a 2 week holiday and had a great time.

The dude talking about the water sems like a bit of a baby, but I still wouldn't drink the tap water - I wouldn't worry about brushing teeth with it though.  I certainly woudn't bring water with me - sounds like a pain in the ***, especially if you bring like 1 - 2 litres a day like you should be drinking.  Being paranoid could actually make you believe you will get sick.

  3. Hi Flossie, me again!

I see you finally booked your hotel in Puerto Plata! Bravo you will have a good time. Just avoid the first days : to much sun and to much ice in the drinks, your body must adapt to the temperature and your system to drink so cold (ice cubes).

Don't drink water from the tap. But you easely use it to brush your teeth, but don't drink it. You don't have to buy your water in the hotel they have a lot of them. If you need some info about excursions just ask and I will help you, just don't buy them in the hotel or from the beach sales people they are to wexpensive and sometimes not of good quality.

  4. If your staying in the Playa Dorada Complex then there are night clubs.. CoCo bongo, The Road Way, The Mangu.

Lots of stuff to do at the plaza.

Drink as much as you can! haha Mamawana. Good stuff.

I really like going in2 puerto Plata City! lots to do there.

things to stay away from are SANKYS!!!!

  5. If your are going to an all-inclusive in Puerto Plata, you will pretty much have whatever you need there. It will be pretty safe there as well. Not to brag, but my country is beautiful, full of hospitable-happy people. Enjoy your vacation and have fun. Take care.

  6. We didn't find any reason to leave our all-inclusive in PR other than to go shopping. Be aware that the shopkeepers are very aggressive and somewhat intimidating but willing to negotiate price.

We did not have a problem with any food we ate at the resort. But absolutely avoid drinking the water. Bring bottled water unless you are willing to pay a higher price for it there. Use it to brush your teeth and of course for drinking. I forgot to use bottled water for brushing my teeth the second day there and ended up regretting it.

If you want extra protection from bad water, keep some mouthwash in your mouth when you take a shower to prevent shower water from seeping down your throat.
