The European Tour postpones The Johnnie Walker Championship for one year
The European Tour officials have decided to skip The Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles from its 2014 International Schedule, as the Ryder Cup will also be staged at The Gleneagles Hotel.
According to the reports, the tournament will return to the European Tour roster in 2015.
Chief Operating Officer and Director of International Policy of The European Tour Keith Waters explained that the tour officials tried to reschedule The Johnnie Walker Championship. However, the organizers were not able to find a suitable date to stage the
event.
As a result, the European Tour officials, along with other related parties, agreed to remove the event from the 2014 calendar.
The Johnnie Walker Championship Director Graeme Marchbank said that he was disappointed to have no option but to delay the event for one year.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he said that the tournament had been a great success in the past few years.
In addition to that, it also provided a good platform to promote the world’s number one Scotch whisky – Johnnie Walker. Therefore, Diageo will miss one of the major highlights on its calendar in 2014.
In the meantime, he also stated that being an Official Partner of The 2014 Ryder Cup, the club officials are trying their best to make optimum preparations to stage one of the elite tournaments in the world of golf.
“As the owner of Gleneagles and as an Official Partner of The 2014 Ryder Cup, Diageo is also working closely with our partners at The European Tour to help deliver a fantastic event,” Marchbank said.
Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup Director, expressed his gratitude towards the owners of The Gleneagles Hotel and the title sponsor Johnnie Walker for agreeing on postponing the event.
“We are very grateful to the management of both Diageo, the owners of Johnnie Walker, and The Gleneagles Hotel for agreeing to postpone the Johnnie Walker Championship so that preparations for The Ryder Cup can begin as planned in July 2014. The magnitude
of The Ryder Cup is such that trying to host the Johnnie Walker Championship in the same season would have compromised both events,” Hills said.
