The Football Association have condemned the Twitter attacks on Ashley Young and Ashley Cole following http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749’s defeat to Italy in the quarter finals of the European Championships.
It was Ashley Young and Ashley Cole who missed their respective penalties for England in the penalty shootout against the Italians, resulting in a 4-2 defeat. This put an end to England’s ambitions in the European competition under the new manager Roy Hodgson.
England went into the tournament as underdogs, but did well to make it past the group stages. They stumbled to a draw against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sweden-c3015 as the progressed to the knockout stages.
The Three Lions had renewed confidence going into the match against Italy and did well to hold out against a stronger, more experienced http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 side up until the penalties. However, once it got to penalties, England’s inexperience showed.
Ashley Young and Ashley Cole missed their respective penalties and since then have been abused on various mediums across the internet, especially on Twitter. The FA revealed they felt the way the duo had been treated was “appalling and unacceptable.”
The FA released a statement saying:
“We are concerned at the reports regarding allegations of abuse aimed at England players http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ashley-Cole-c6809 and Ashley Young on Twitter.”
The Football Association urged the fans to consider the fact that the players in question had given their all for the national team and it was unacceptable the way they were being treated because of their misses in the penalty shootout.
It continued:
“They have just given everything for the national team at Euro 2012 and it is appalling and unacceptable that messages of an abusive type are being posted. We support any police investigation in identifying who is behind this.”
The official statement released by the FA claimed that they would be supportive of a police investigation, if it was begun, to identify and reprimand whoever was behind the offensive and abusive posts on the social media outlet. The England team, along with
Young and Cole, has returned to home and will be expected to begin preparations for the World Cup 2014.
