The FIVB withdraws Quebec Open from the 2012 World Tour – Volleyball news
The 2nd edition of the Quebec Open Beach Volleyball Tournament, which was scheduled to be held in Quebec, Canada from August 21-26, has been withdrawn from the 2012 SWATCH FIVB World Tour.
The news has been recently released from the head quarters of International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in Lausanne, Switzerland. The financial limitations of the local promoters of the event have caused the cancellation of the tournament. Last year, the
Quebec Open had an amazing run and teams from all over the world participated in the tournament.
This is the second time in the on-going season that the International Governing Authority of Volleyball, the FIVB, has pulled out an event from World Tour. Previously, the Stavanger Grand Slam was cancelled on account of similar financial predicament in
Norway. The Stavanger Grand Slam was supposed to be held from June 25 to July 1 but it was dropped from the list. This time, the organisers of the Quebec Open have cited the same reason that negates another event from 2012 SWATCH FIVB World Tourney.
The Quebec Open was added to the SWATCH World Tour for the first time in 2011 with the Seminaire des Peres Maristes and l’Externat St-Jean Berchmans in the Quebec borough of Sillery forming the backdrop. In the men’s division, top three positions were secured
by American tandems. The Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers settled for gold medals, while Fuerbringer-Lucena and Gibb-Rosenthal finished second and third, respectively. In respective women’s competition, Antonelli and Talita of Brazil proved
their endeavour and took away the gold, whereas their compatriots Maria Clara and Carol seized silver-ware. Another Brazilian pair Lima and Vivian claimed bronze at 2011 Quebec Open.
Following the withdrawal of two events, the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour will now have twelve tournaments in thirteen countries, which will include six Open Tournaments and eight Grand Slam tournaments. The tour is set to be closed after a period of seven
months.
The organising committee and promoters of the Quebec Open expressed regret regarding the lack of funds. Nonetheless, they appreciated the support of International Volleyball Federation and everyone else who supported the last Quebec event.
