  1. Cool! Check out your school if you are in grade or high school still. If you're in high school, I recommend going to the band director and telling them you want to learn. They have a beginner's class, or they can suggest joining the marching band. It's really fun. My band director switches students to new instruments every year and teaches them how to play it or gives them a good private teacher. And there will be a lot of students willing to help you learn. I find the best way to learn a new instrument is just by joining a band and doing it. But do make sure you get a private teacher. Ask around colleges and local music stores, they most likely have a private lesson program and you get discounts sometimes on music supplies and instruments. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

  2. As above find a good teacher! Ask at your local music store or band director! They usually have a list of teachers in the area that they trust! Or if you are still at school your music teachers may know! There may even be a teacher attached to the school!

I would least a year before you join a band. Otherwise you will struggle with it and get frustrated with the band, flute and music. I have seen this a lot in some of my students Notice how I say AT LEAST a year. Your flute teacher will know when you are ready!

A fabulous website is one by Jen cluff http://www.jennifercluff.com/

It has fantastic articles on flute playing! A great holiday project

    Good luck

  3. Since you are a beginner, I would try this first -  check to see your town has any colleges with music programs, and if there is a school, contact the flute teacher there and ask them if they can recommend a teacher for you. They will probably recommend a student of theirs.

Another route is to see if your town has an orchestra, and if they do, contact the personnel manager and ask them if they can recommend a teacher for you.

You can also call around to local music stores and see if the offer private flute lessons. I'd try the other routes first, because if you take lessons from someone at  a music store, you pay the same, but the teacher doesn't make as much because the store takes a cut.

One more way - call high schools in your area and talk to band directors. Most of them will have a list of teachers that they refer students too.

As far as joining a band, check to see if there is a community band in your area. It will take you a while before you will be up to playing with them, but with a good teacher you'll get there.

Find a teacher first, and they should be able to help you.
