Question:

The Flyers are more than $4m over the cap. Is this the end for Hatcher and Rathje?

These two account for $7m. It's doubtful Rathje can play again and Hatcher isn't getting younger (or quicker). So, what would you do if you are Paul Holmgren.

  1. get rid of rathje. metroploit was a waste in signing even when hes just a fourth liner. risk one of the what seems to be hundrends of young talent we have and bring them up early. we need hatcher though, anybody who says that he is to old and big and slow is absolutely correct, but anybody who says that we dont need them was dropped on their head as a child. were losing our captain jason smith, and we need the bruiser in hatcher to really be the philadelphia flyers.

  2. Hatcher was a has been for a few seasons now. Rathje if he still wants to play should be a minor league guy. But they will most likely both be gone really soon. New blood for the Flyers

  3. Someone will be traded for picks or propects to play in the AHL which doesnt count against the CAP!

  4. Rathje won't be able to play next year, so he is off the books.  I think that Hatcher should retire.  It is time.

  5. IDK

    and IDC

jk, maybe to soon to tell

  6. Hatcher should have retired last year and Rathje will probably retire as well.

  7. That cap number is not totally accurate because it includes players who are on long term IR and players who will be on the Phantoms next season.  Rathje is far less of a factor in this discussion.  They received cap relief for him last year and barring a miracle recovery, will do the same this season.  They will also get relief for Kapanen's $1.25M salary since he is retiring.  Those two salaries alone account for $4.75M.

Hatcher poses the real problem.  The best thing that could happen for the Flyers is that he retires.  I have read rumors about the Flyers having interest in Dan Boyle.  If they could persuade Tampa to take Hatcher, they could include one of the players in the $2-$5M salary range and it could be possible.
