The Formula 1 Awards 2010 – Part 1
It is time for the 2010 Formula One Awards. A look at the sport from a light-hearted, fresh and most of all, Oscar-like angle.
The ceremony kicks off with recognition to the best props for the current season. Thanks to their ‘alleged underhand branding’ with Marlboro or purely for the mystery of it, the award goes to the scarlet Ferrari F1 team. The team has been accused of sporting a bar-code that looks a spitting image of the underside of a pack of Marlboro cigarette. Whether the rumors are true or not, the increasing controversy adds more beauty to the bright red Ferrari – a unanimous decision!
The following category is for Actor in a Comical Role - a category that identifies a performance in a comical capacity. Despite witnessing plenty of on-track scenes that does bring out a random chuckle from most formula one viewers, the award for best comical performance goes to the heroics of Lewis Hamilton and his off-track dramatics on the streets of Australia. The British driver was fined for reckless driving, apparently drifting on a Mercedes E500 – an irony as it’s hard to see a formula one driver of Hamilton’s caliber even remotely losing control of a vehicle as adjudged by the Australian police. The Mercedes McLaren driver also won the consolation title of ‘dickhead’ as quoted by Victoria Roads Minister Tim Pallas.
Next in line is perhaps one of the most exciting award that the sport has to offer. Owing to the fact that performances would most often be marred by gossip, media and plain old conspiracy theories. It is recognition to the best dialogue of the season so far. Two people have been nominated for their wits.
First in line is the CEO of the CIA, none other than Mr. Bernie Ecclestone. It was the 25th anniversary of the Hungarian Grand Prix meaning that it was supposed to be anything but ‘lavish’. The Hungarian President Pal Schmitt himself blessed the gathering with his presence and after giving a show of a 1,000 year old crown, here is what Ecclestone had to say:
“Was your crown made in China?”
The second nomination might be a little unsettling for old Ferrari and Michael Schumacher fans. The comment involves Barrichello’s comment following the last lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix:
“If he (Michael Schumacher) wants to go to heaven, in the event he is going to heaven, I don’t want to go before him.
It might take a lot to bash your old team mate, be it anger or be it bottled up frustration. This year’s best dialogue, despite being one-sided in nature, goes to Mr. Bernie Ecclestone – You can only be Bernie Ecclestone to be able to pull off such a comment on the President of a country!
The upcoming award is for the driver that brought a distinguished flair to the sport – A freshness that only a newcomer could. It is the award for, The Best Newcomer for 2010. A youngster that was merely a third driver for Toyota and asked to stand in for an injured Timo Glock in the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2009, Kamui Kobayashi takes Pole in the department by a landslide! Kamui Kobayashi has indeed been a breath of fresh air not only for the BMW Sauber F1 team, but also for the motorsport in general this year. The Japanese driver has continued to impress with his raw pace and gave the team its first peak of Q3 this year. Often out qualifying team-mate Pedro de la Rosa, a former McLaren Mercedes third driver himself,  the man has strived a great deal to shed the label of a test driver and join the F1 mainstream to slug it out on track – An impressive 12th position in the standings and a deserved Best Newcomer for 2010 award.
To be continued…
