The Four Men to achieve Grand Slams in the Open Era Part III: Roger Federer
A career Grand Slam consists of victory at all four Majors, not necessarily within the same calendar year. These Majors are the Australian Open, the French Open, the Wimbledon Championship and the US Open.
The seven men to achieve this feat are known as the Magnificent Seven. These men are Fred Perry, Don Budge, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Of these seven men, the three players from Open Era are Australian Rod Laver,
American Andre Agassi, Swiss Roger Federer and Spanish Rafael Nadal. Part three of this feature details Roger Federer and his tennis career.
Roger Federer is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. He is considered to be the greatest tennis player of all time, by several tennis critics, sports analysts and other players. Federer is often called the Federer Express, or, for short, the Fed
Express. He is also known as the Swiss Maestro, or just Maestro.
The 29 year old tennis player turned pro at the age of 17, in the year 1998. As a junior, his greatest achievement was winning the Wimbledon juniors singles. He is a right handed player with a one handed backhand.
Federer’s track record includes an 80.7% winning rate, with 722 successes to 172 losses. He has a total of 63 titles, and his highest ranking was World Number 1, which he retained for a record breaking 237 consecutive weeks, and a total number of 285 weeks
(one week less than Pete Sampras held the honor). Today, he is ranked as World Number 3.
The Maestro holds a record 16 Grand Slam titles. He has participated in 22 Grand Slam finals, and holds the record for making it to at least the semi finals of 23 Grand Slam tournaments.
Roger Federer experienced success for the first time at Wimbledon in 2003, winning his first Grand Slam title by beating Mark Philippoussis in straight sets. He also made it to one singles Masters Series 1000 Event on clay in Rome, and won seven of nine
finals on the ATP tour.
In the year 2004, Federer made his way to three Grand Slam singles titles. He was the first person to achieve this since 1988, when Mats Wilander accomplished a similar feat. The Swiss player’s first Grand Slam title on the hard court came over Marat Safin,
at that year’s Australian Open. After this, he won his second Wimbledon trophy by defeating Andy Roddick. Federer then proceeded to the 2004 US Open where he defeated Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets for his first title at this Grand Slam tournament.
Federer completed his career Grand Slam in 2009 with his win over Robin Soderling at that year’s French Open. The tennis pro managed to volley his way into victory in straight sets, joining the Magnificent Six (now Seven) as one of the exclusive players
who had managed to win every Grand Slam title at least once during their career.
In addition to his career Grand Slam titles, Federer has won 16 titles in total. He has four titles at the Australian Open (in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010), one at the French Open (2009), six at Wimbledon (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009) and an additional
five at the US Open (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008).
Federer’s latest tournament was the 2010 US Open, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the semi final. The athlete also opted out of the Davis Cup this year, though he normally plays on behalf of Switzerland.
Federer’s total career earnings are US $57, 439, 704; this is the greatest amount anyone has ever earned, making the 29 year old the all time leader in earnings. He lives with his wife, former Women’s Tennis Association player Mirka Federer, and his children
in Wollerau, Switzerland.
