  1. You whack a ball into a gopher hole. (in the words of Robin Williams on Broadway =P ).

Never been good myself. I get +10 on practically every hole, then again only played it a few times so that might explain it.

You have Par number, which is the number of shots you take to get into a hole. Each section is called a 'hole' and is numbered (1st to 18th... the 19th is the clubhouse for drinks, remember that!).

So for example, on the 5th hole you might have a Par 4, meaning you should hole the ball by your 4th shot. If you do it in three, your score is -1. Do it in five your score is +1. And so on and so forth. Having the LOWEST score is the objective.

Clubs depends on the terrain and distance to the hole. You use the higher numbered clubs and the PW (pitching wedge) as if you want lots of height and short distance. Opposite for long shots (Club 5 is my fave for the fairway).

The driver? Need I say more. Whack the ball towards the hole! Important: your feet should be parallel and the line between the toes on each foot should point in the direction of the hole... I found I did much better like that.

I am amateur, as an amateur I don't expect to do the best (and with +10 on each hole, I don't =P). But it is still a lot of fun!

  2. Lachlan W pretty much got the scoring and the club numbers

correct. also if the hole is a par 4 and you hole out in 3 strokes

-1 that is also know as a birdie and if you hole out in 5 strokes

+1 that is known as a bogey. Also I would recommend leaving

your driver in the bag until you get your golf swing down. Use

your 3 or 5 wood to tee off. They are a more lofted club so you might not get the distance but the shaft is a little more shorter for better control.

  3. You count every stroke.  The lowest score wins.

Par is the number of strokes the hole should take. A long hole like 450 metre is going to be a par 5, a short hole will be par 3.

Birdie is one under par.  Eagle is two under par, Albatross is three under par.  Boigie is one over par, double Boigie is two over par.

If you loose a ball, its a penalty stroke; you just throw a new ball over your shoulder form near where you lost it and play the new ball where it lands.

Clubs.  You tee (a little launch pad you stick in the ground and place the ball on) off with a driver(a half round head) usually, its heavy and has a slight angle of lift.  A three driver has a higher lift angle than a one driver.  If its windy you want to keep it low; and when you use a low angle of lift it should bounce further.

Irons:3-9. 9 has a really high angle of lift so the ball will not go as far and will stop soon after it lands.  I think it can be used as sand wedge - just to get the ball out of the sand pit.  Use the lower numbered clubs to go further. The putter is used on the green, it has no angle of lift and the ball just roles along the ground.

If people are coming up behind you, its courtesy to wave them through and less stress full when you are learning.

There are computer games that will give you the theory but the real thing is much more challenging.

    Good luck

  4. you try to get the highest amount of strokes possible!!!!

if you cant make the ball in the hole then dig yourself one

  5. I'll try to explain it as simple as I can. It's basically hitting a ball to a hole. The lower the score, the better. Unlike other sports, your goal in goal is to have the lowest posible score. Most of the time you use the "Driver" for the first shot of a hole. When you reach the green you use a "Putter". Different clubs have different equivalent distances. Different people have different distances.

  6. Each shot counts as one stroke. You add up all the strokes it took you to get the ball into the hole each time. Higher number is worse because it means it took you more shots. Lower number clubs go farther, higher number clubs and pitching, sand, and lob wedge go shorter distances.

    As simple as that!
