The Giants Crushed the Rangers to Lead the World Series, 2-0
The San Francisco Giants are a team that barely made it to the playoffs this year. But now, especially after Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday, the Giants are looking less like underdogs and more like World Series Champions.
The Giants are leading the Texas Rangers, 2-0, after a crushing defeat for the Rangers on Thursday. The Giants won, 9-0, with Matt Cain pitching 7 ⅔ scoreless innings along with Edgar Renteria hitting a home run and three RBIs.
"We've put ourselves in a good situation," said Cain "We've just got to take that confidence and some of the good approaches that we've had into these last two games and take them down to Texas with us."
Cain has not allowed a single earned run since the postseason started.
The starting of the game was a rather slow one, with neither team getting any runs and only two hits apiece in 4½ innings.
However, San Francisco turned this around in the bottom of the fifth. With C.J. Wilson pitching for the Rangers, Juan Uribe first struck out. Renteria then came up and blasted a 388 foot homerun to left field, followed by Cain and Andres Torres hitting out.
The score was now 1-0, to the Giants.
There were no other points until the bottom of the seventh, with the Giants at bat. Off of a pitch by Wilson, Cody Ross walked. Darren Oliver then relieved Wilson, with Aubrey Huff grounding out to first base, with Ross advancing to second. Off of a single
to right center field by Uribe, Ross scored a run, with Uribe advancing to second. Renteria and Cain then struck out. The score was now 2-0, still to the Giants.
The bottom of the eighth was probably one of the best innings that the Giants had since the franchise started. With Darren O’Day replacing Oliver, the first two batters, Torres and Freddy Sanchez, struck out. With one out remaining, Buster Posey singled
to shallow center field. Derek Holland then replaced O’Day and he walked Nate Schierholtz and Ross. With Ross walked, Posey was on third base and Schierholtz was on second. Aubrey Huff was then walked, forcing Posey to score, Schierholtz to third and Ross
to second.
With three walks on three batters, the Rangers sent Mark Lowe in as pitcher. On his pitch, Uribe walked, forcing Schierholtz to score, Ross to third, and Huff to second. Off of a single by Renteria, Ross and Huff scored, with Uribe to third base. Lowe was
then replaced by Michael Kirkman who pitched to Aaron Rowand for a triple to deep right center field. With this hit, Uribe and Renteria both scored, followed by Torres hitting a double to left field, allowing Rowand to score. At the end of the eighth, the
Giants had made seven runs, two of which were forced from a walk, with only four hits. The Rangers had walked four batters in this inning.
The game ended with the Giants winning by 9, with a score of 9-0.
"Unbelievable," said Renteria "You guys know I have power."
Renteria had only eight runs in the last two regular seasons.
The Giants became the first team in the history of the World Series to have two outs and no one on base, and still score seven runs in a single inning.
"You take all the runs you can get," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
The next game will take place at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.
"Now we're going in their ballpark," said Bochy. "I'm sure they're going to have a sense of confidence. We've been road warriors, so that's what it's going to take right now."
13 of the past 14 teams that had a 2-0 lead in the series have gone on to win, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with Game 3 of the World Series to take place on Saturday, October 30, 2010.
