Once again, it is time for one of the prestigious events on the European Tour, the Johnnie Walker Championship. It is one of the most awaited tournaments of the year.
In the event, the best players of golf gather at a stage to fight for the championship. The venue for this four-day event is the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
This auspicious event has been a part of the European Tour for thirteen years now. It debuted in the year 1999. At that time, it was introduced as the Scottish PGA Championship.
This name was used for only two years. After that, it was given the name of the hotel, the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship. This name was used for one year only in 2001.
In 2002, its name was changed to Diageo Scottish PGA Championship, which remained so for one year as well. After that, it was named Diageo Championship at Gleneagles for two years.
In 2005, the event was organised and sponsored by Johnnie Walker (a Scotch whisky brand). Thus, it got its new name Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. This was its finals name. From 2005 to 2011, this name is being used.
Many sports have been hosted at this stage. The place has a great sporting history. This course has great importance and its importance will increase even more in 2014.
In 2014, this course will be under the spot light as the biggest golf event, the Ryder Cup 2014, will be held here. It is going to be held on Scottish soil after four decades.
This year, the Johnnie Walker Championship will be once again be held at the prestigious Gleneagles Hotel. The four-day event is going to start from the 23rd of August 2012 and is going to end on the 26th of August 2012.
In 2011, this event was bagged by Denmark’s professional golfer, Thomas Bjorn. After four days, he was tied with four other players. All of them had a score of eleven-under par. In the end, Bjorn won the tournament in the playoffs. This year, he will be
looking again to bag this prestigious trophy.
The best record in the Johnnie Walker Championship is of Adam Scott. In the year 2002, he bagged the Championship. After the four-day event his score was twenty six-under par.
This is becoming the most awaited tournament for the players. One reason for it is that, after the tournament, teams for the Ryder cup will be decided.
The Scottish professional golfer, Paul Lawrie commented about this tournament in an interview, he said, "I think I’m almost there, but when you're there is when the team sheet comes out on the Monday after the Johnnie Walker Championship, so I’m looking
forward to that”.
Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello also talked about the importance of the cup next month, he said, “It’s looking like the race to get into José’s team will go right down to the wire so I’m getting ready for what will be one of the most important run of tournaments
in my life, culminating at the Johnnie Walker Championship. Fingers crossed I will be in a qualifying position and can put in a good final performance at the 2014 Ryder Cup venue”.
